One of the best kept secrets of the past two years in the Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, and Morrisville area is the fact the ASA youth football program has an older flag league. We plan to change that for the 2019 fall season.
For many years previously ASA offered a 5-7 year old flag division, which will still be the case going forward. However, for the past two years we have added an 8-12 year old division. In the older division we have been able to put together 4 teams of 10-11 players and form a small league. Over these past two years we have been in contact with many other organizations in the area that currently field tackle and/or younger flag teams to expand with us in the older flag division. Our goal this year is to double our number of participants and move to 3 age groups; 5-7, 8-10, 11-13/14. We also hope to engage with other local youth football organizations to create leagues for each division to play in.
At the national level, participation in tackle football has been on the decline over the last few years. ASA remains committed to our youth tackle football and takes great pride in the level of training our coaches go through every year with USA Football and the NFL Heads Up program. The safety of the youth in our programs is and has always been our top priority. That being said, we understand that tackle football isn’t for every kid, at every age. Parents have safety concerns. We are hoping that by expanding our flag program to the older kids we might be able to bridge that gap for some families. The intent of the league is to bring the game to as large a number of youth in the area as possible and allow the kids and parents to become familiar with our program and the various options within it.
We currently run the league through the NFL Flag organization. We hope to field enough teams and have enough registrants to play 7 vs 7 which is a very fast paced, fun and exciting format for the kids. Each participant will receive an NFL flag Jersey and shorts that is theirs to keep. We also provide the flags for each player to use.
How is ASA different from other local flag football organizations? We hope to provide a higher level of competition in our league. We practice two weeknights a week for 90-120 min each and we play our games on Saturdays. For many of you who have participated in other local flag football leagues we hope you will agree that this is a significant increase in field and preparation time. In turn, this leads to a more organized and competitive product on the field. Our goal of including other organizations from Raleigh, Wake Forest, Sanford and more will give our kids a great experience and range of competition.
